portable winch on the rescue squad snapped today during training. The winch snapped at a very light load. The failure is because the winch was put away with the cable being looped on its self causing the winch to spool off of the top instead of off of the bottom. When the winch is spooled over the top it causes the cable to rub a sharp edge. This situation of the winch getting spooled backwards can only happen for two reason. The first being the cause of this failure, the cord looping back on its self. The second cause is if the winch is completely extended and allowed to spin around the drum the other way. Both scenarios can be recognized by the direction of the controller not matching the labels. Ie. Red/out or Black/ in. If label says red is out and you hit the red button and the cable spools in this is reason for alarm. This is sort of common to synthetic rope winch and needs to be caught before a load is applied because it will fail with very little weight and no warning. Ticket and follow up email written to small tools. | |
IF DEFECT, WAS A REPAIR REQUEST MADE? | YES |
