Loss to the extended BVFD family: Ms. Lucille Miles

FS 15 Partners -

Last night around 1am, Ms. Lucille Miles, mother of our Office Manager Suzi Miles, passed peacefully after being surrounded by her loving family for days.  The holidays were a bittersweet time for the Miles family as Lucille was the matriarch of a huge family that rallied to celebrate holidays, birthdays, and all the joys of life.  She was the center and fountain of strength and joy that brought her family together.  As a tribute to Lucille, let us now muster that same energy to surround Suzi with support and care.

Lucille has long deep connections to the BVFD and local community.  She grew up playing with the daughters of Buck Seibel (our first Fire Chief) in their home.  Lucille was well acquainted with the original fire department phone, which was mounted over the doorframe to the Seibel's basement, and the girls all knew of its importance (and to never touch it!) .  Starting at age 14, Lucille worked at Seibels dairy.  The Miles family was interwoven in much Burtonsville history.  They were founding members of the Epiphany Lutheran Church, had close family ties to Fehr's Nursery, and so many of the local families.  Lucille was the owner of the local craft store for 25 years.  It was one of the original store fronts in the Briggs Chaney Plaza (where the laundromat is now) and two doors down from the Briggs Chaney Deli (original Mike and Barry's).  Lucille supported the BVFD from the start and more recently prepared the black bunting for us, that is draped following a Member's death.  She often helped with printing programs and her and Carl (her husband) frequented Open House and other events.

Lucile was the proud mother of six children, 14 grandchildren, and three great granddaughters.  She passed on her love of community to Suzi and we all benefit from many aspects of the Miles family legacy.  The BVFD has always been a family focused organization and the Miles family exemplifies everything that we hold dear.

Please hold Suzi close in your thoughts and prayers as we all work to support and assist her.  Arrangements will be shared once finalized.  Suzi's Office will be closed this week.  Please direct any immediate needs to Ms. Katie Bulla or any BVFD Officer.
