Personnel Advancement - FF Trent Kriha to Aide Status

 BVFD Team -

The BVFD proudly announces the advancement of Firefighter Trent Kriha who has now earned Officer in Charge (OIC) status on our Ambulance.

Congratulations to Firefighter Kriha who joined the BVFD in April when he became a Live-In Member from Huntington Beach, California. FF Kriha arrived with his National Registry Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certification which he earned while going through his college fire academy. He also had an introduction to fire fighting, having been a fire explorer for the local county fire department as well as the classroom portion of the two state fire academy.

In just the six months Trent has been with Burtonsville, he has successfully completed over a dozen training programs, including:

- Maryland Emergency Medical Technician Refresher Course
- Firefighter I Training Class
- Firefighter II Training Class
- Hazardous Materials - First Responder Operations
- Protective Envelope & Foam
- NIMS IS100 Incident Command System
- NIMS IS200 Federal Disaster Worker
- NIMS IS700 National Incident Management System
- EEO/AA and the Law
- Cultural Diversity
- Blood Borne Pathogens
- Radio Operations
- MDC Operations
- eMEDS Patient Care Reporting
- Firehouse Statistical Reporting

Even after all of the formal training, there were many steps to be completed before taking command of a BVFD Ambulance. FF Kriha had to successfully complete a series of comprehensive written and practical in-station examinations. After completing all tests,  FF Kriha rode “Charge” under the evaluation of an experienced Charge EMT for a series of evaluation calls. This process is designed to allow the EMT to demonstrate knowledge and ability in the field, before being permitted to be in charge of an Ambulance and crew in any situation.

The BVFD congratulates FF Kriha for completing this rigorous process and earning Charge status.

Thanks for all you do each week to keep us growing and better serving our community.

Subject: PL Vulcan Man vs Machine class

Greetings,

I have contracted PL Vulcan Training Concepts to provide their full day Man Vs. Machine course at 15. As I need to fill around 15 additional seats in the class I wanted to reach out to those assigned to 15 prior to pushing out to other LFRD's as we're the group most likely to work together on any incidents.

The course will run on 11/2 with a 0700 or 0800 start and run the full dayside. The course costs $150 per person. If personnel are interested I'll need commitments by 10/10 and cash or check (payable to BVFD) by 10/18. *I cannot accept venmo, paypal, apple pay, or any of the other similar options. I have no doubt someone will ask.*

I already have a detail request in for the rescue squad for that dayside. If personnel working that day are interested we'll have to work out additional details with the BC.

Here is information on the course for those interested: https://plvulcanfiretrainingconcepts.com/courses/man-vs-machinery

Feel free to reach out with any questions.

Bay door #8 was stuck in the up position. We were eventually able to get it closed and to remain closed however the alarm remained intermittently sounding. The breaker has been turned off to this door so the noise stops. A defect was called in and the door company will supposedly be sent out on Monday.

BVFD Auxiliary Portrait Fundraiser - Door to Door Solicitiation

Station 15 Personnel:

If you get phone calls regarding door-to-door solicitors, please advise that the ONLY authorized fundraisers must display an ID card on a red lanyard with the BVFD logo.  In addition, they should display a letter from the BVFD.

Our Auxiliary has authorized representatives of Safety One to conduct a Portrait Fundraiser.  These funds will go toward needed items and apparatus  so that we may better serve the community. Funds from past years have purchased power stretchers, a Lucas device, Vital sign monitoring devices and other equipment.

Everyone who participates will receive a complimentary 10” by 13” family portrait taken at the station.

Citizen concerns can be directed to Ms. Miles during the day or may 240-773-8957 after work hours.  Citizens can also contact the Safety One contractor, Ed Williams at 240-675-6582.

Thank you.  Tami

Hopefully the last squad update for the week...

The 5 squad configuration will remain through the weekend. If something goes down they'll move into RRS1.

Otherwise:
  • RS729 moves into RRS1 on Monday.
  • RS742 is coming back today but can't go in service until 2 parts come in on Monday and can be installed.
  • RS742 will hopefully go back in on Tuesday and we'll move into RS742B.
  • J and T is still chasing around electrical issues with RS715. Once they're done it will go to AES for work on the Pierce modules. There is no ETA for return at this point.

Squads update

FYSA

Per the DOC and Operations Chief:

We will not be moving into RRS1. RS729 has a DOT drop date of Monday. Between that and the fact that all of our equipment is on our unit in Baltimore, the county will remain at the 5 squad configuration rather than more multiple units around for 4 days

It is possible that RS742 will be back before or during the weekend which may free up RS742B and we will move into that in that scenario.

Additional discussion are on-going about whether or not our squad will need to be stripped while its gone. More to follow when I have it.

Wolff and I talked with Branch Manager at Johnson Towers end of day yesterday.

They had a melted wire which he clarified as going from Starter to ECM. The thought is that it was seeking a ground from the starter. They are searching for a compromised ground in wiring somewhere. Also thinking that it may be causing the codes and that they may go away. They may or may not be related. Same goes for the  Outside chance this could be the com loss as well. They are still working on it.

Kriha IECS change

Greetings,

I am pleased to announce that Mr. Kriha's IECS status was just updated. The formal list update tonight will reflect it. Effective today Mr. Kriha is an IECS Fire 1. He meets all requirements for minimum staffing in the aide position on A715. He will also now transition to a yellow helmet and be able to operate in an IDLH, however, he will not count as minimum staffing on fire apparatus until his Fire 2 class paperwork clears.

Feel free to reach out with any questions.

RS717 has a hydraulic leak coming from one of the lines on the rear winch. It is an issue that 17 has been dealing with but may not have been passed on and now the hydraulic Fluid is low enough that it may affect the capacity of the winch. Hydraulic fluid level can not currently be read on the sight glass that can be found under the salvage bucket in the Driver side rear coffin on top of RS.
Please check with 17 in the morning to see if they have Hydraulic fluid that we can pick up.

Station Combination Changed Today

BVFD Personnel -

Today, the cipher lock combination is being updated for all doors to Fire Station 15.  All personnel should primarily be using your MCFRS ID/Swipe card to gain access.  Your access utilizing your ID card is not affected by the cipher lock update.

The new door code will not be e-mailed.  Contact me or someone in quarters to get the new code.

Station security is a responsibility we all share.  Always protect access cards and codes.  Never leave doors propped open, unless authorized personnel are working near the open door.  Secure all bay doors when leaving for calls.  Secure all entrances before securing for the night.

If you do not have a working MCFRS ID/Access card, please e-mail full details on the loss or failure of your card.

Thank you.
